Surfwise

Surfwise

I've been meaning to write this one for a while now but I didn't really know how to put into perspective everything that went on in the film just because there was a lot of information to cover. All I can say is wow! What a crazy, interesting life the Paskowitz family had.

I most definitely recommend watching this one.  This documentary had everything. It had surfing, crude humor (it was hilarious) , raw emotion and it was just honest.

It wasn't that uncommon to have had a large number of children in the 30's or 40's , my own great grandmother had fourteen kids. However, in the 60's I'm sure it sparked the interest of many bystanders. Not only did they have nine children, but they were all raised in one camper and did not have a traditional education.

They were however, the envy of other children or people who wished they could be like the Paskowitz family traveling and surfing all over the country. Many of them even participated in and won surf competitions.

At some point in the film it does get a bit intense as the children who are now grown adults begin delving into their frustrations and some resentment they had towards their father's beliefs. Some children went as far as to leave the camper in their teenage years to return and immerse themselves into current day society.

Even siblings had resentment towards each other over dealings or proceedings involving a summer surf camp the family had owned. Despite their frustrations and problems which every family has, I think deep down in many forms they did appreciate the sense of freedom and bonding their close knit family had and did realize the benefits of the childhood their father and mother gave them. Having not seen their parents in many years, it was nice to see the entire family reunite at the end of the film which gave a nice closure.

If you do decide to watch this film, you definitely won't be disappointed.
